08/03/2010 - SECRETARY OF STATE UNVEILS COMMEMORATIVE STONE ON NEW LEIGH HEALTH CENTRE

Andy Burnham, Secretary of State for Health and MP for Leigh, unveiled the foundation stone for the new Leigh Health Centre on Friday 5th March 2010.

The event is to commemorate the building work that is now under way on the Leigh Infirmary site.

This is a major health development for Leigh and the surrounding area and patients are set to benefit from a fantastic new development of local health services.

The main building construction began in 2009, and the new Health Centre is due to open in early autumn.

The LIFT scheme is expected to be the first phase of a wider development of the Leigh Infirmary site involving the Primary Care Trust, Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust, Wigan Metropolitan Borough’s Adult Services and 5 Boroughs Specialist NHS Trust.

The scheme will represent an £11m investment in state-of-the-art facilities for primary care and community services, and key elements include:

• Replacing the existing Grasmere Street and College Street
health centres
• Walk-in centre, physiotherapy department and other services
currently delivered at Leigh Infirmary
• New 4 chair dental suite
• New integrated Children’s Centre
• Specialist Weight Management Service
• Adult Sexual Health Services

Commenting on the foundation stone unveiling, PCT Chairman, Alan Stephenson, said, “We are absolutely delighted that the Secretary of State has agreed to add his name to this major health development in Leigh. Work is progressing well on site to provide these much needed modern facilities. Anyone who has used the LIFT buildings in other parts of the Borough will know just how good they are and the wide range of services that can be offered to local people from them.”
