On the eve of Remembrance Sunday, Andy hosted an event to commemorate the sacrifice and contribution of veterans' in the Leigh area.
Andy recently attended Hindley Community High School to present staff and pupils with awards in ICT, English and the Arts marking another successful year in the life of the school.

Andy laced up his boots on Friday, 20th March 2009 and took his spot as striker in a special police team as part of a football competition designed to offer a diversionary activity for young people in Wigan and Leigh. More than 250 teenagers have been taking part in regular Friday night sessions of the borough’s Game On Midnight Leagues since they began in January.

Woodhouse Park Lifestyle Centre was visited by Andy on Monday, 16th March 2009 as part of his visit to Wythenshawe in South Manchester. Accompanied by Paul Goggins, MP for Wythenshawe and Sale East, the Minister was given a tour of the £4.5m facility which was opened in April 2006.
It is a fully inclusive and unique community, youth, leisure and sports facility providing a wide range of activities for all ages and abilities. Commenting on what he saw, Culture Secretary Andy Burnham said: “The Woodhouse Park Lifestyle Centre is a fantastic facility and has clearly become a landmark of the community in the three years that it has been open. The activities hosted here offer something for everyone and it’s clear that local people of all ages will enjoy the centre for decades to come."

Andy Burnham today visited a Leigh success story - Heybook Music Store on Charles Street (off Bradshawgate) and discovered that the store is helping budding musicians purchase instruments thanks to an Arts Council England’s initiative.

Andy officially opened the Eastern Skills Centre on Friday, 2nd October 2009. The vocational centre of excellence provides youngsters with practical skills such as bricklaying and joinery and is a collaboration of six high schools from the east of the borough.

Wigan and Leigh Pensioners Link has received funding for a new project to help more over 55s in the area get local access to the information, advice and support that enables them to remain independent.
The Coalfields Regeneration Trust (CRT) has awarded the charity, based on Charles Street in Leigh, a grant of £78,357 towards an 18-month project to establish six “one stop shops” across Wigan. Additional funding has been secured from Wigan Council.
Andy presented Leigh Resident and WWII veteran, Molly Yates with the Defence Medal, WWII Campaign Medal and a Veterans’ Lapel Badge at the annual Veterans’ Ceremony hosted by Andy, held on Friday, 6th November 2009.
